Joaquin Niemann is 81 st in the world, slivered between Matt Wallace and Max McGreevy in the rankings.
It’s an unfair characterization of his game. If any player deserves to complain about the arbitrary nature of the world rankings, it would be the 26-year-old after winning the LIV Singapore title on Sunday.
A single win on a tour that plays only three rounds should be discounted, but two wins in four events in 2025 and two additional wins last year make what the Chilean has done worth something. However, the world rankings have decided that any accomplishments on LIV mean nothing when calculating the rankings.
“I feel like it's just proud of the work that I'm putting in,” Niemann said of a five shot victory of five-time major winner Brooks Koepka. “I feel like confidence is -- you built confidence, and I feel like you build that confidence through preparation, and I'm pretty excited that I have two weeks.”
Niemann was tied with Dustin Johnson at 11-under after two rounds. Still, as Johnson was imploding on Sunday at the Sentosa Golf Club, finishing a 2-over, the South American was crafting a bogey-free 65, tying the day’s lowest score with Koepka.
“I was a little bit nervous,” Niemann said. “You're always nervous before a round about what's going to happen. It's a game where everything could happen at any time, and starting the way, I started playing, it really kind of freed me up a little bit for the rest of the round, starting with a birdie on the first hole, and then being able to birdie the third and the fourth.”
Niemann played in three majors in 2024, missing the U.S. Open.
With a T22 at the Masters, T39 at the PGA Championship and a T58 at The Open Championship, Niemann made the cut in the tree majors he played in and finished T9 at the Olympics in Paris.
His next appearance is LIV Miami before attempting to win his first major with his sixth attempt in the Masters at Augusta National.
After missing the cut in 2018, Niemann has played the weekend on the last four occasions, with a T16 being his best finish since 2023.
“My next two weeks are going to be good preparation for me for what's coming, LIV Miami is going to be a good challenge,” Niemann said after his win in Singapore. “Then we've got the first major of the year. I'm really looking forward for the next two weeks that I have to get ready and put the best preparation and the most effort so I can build that confidence for those two weeks.”
According to Draft Kings, Niemann is +4000 to win the Masters, but it’s hard to underestimate how his game has resonated on LIV in the last two years.
In 2024, Niemann had two wins, two runner-up finishes, two third-place finishes, four additional top 10s, and all in only 14 events.
Niemann is the hottest player on LIV in 2025 after four events with the two wins in Australia and Singapore, a T12 in Hong Kong and a T15 in Saudi Arabia.
“I've been loving the pressure, I've been loving new situations, being in that moment where I feel uncomfortable,” Niemann said. “I feel like I try to be the more often that I can in those situations because I know those are moments where you build yourself and you get better.”
