Most sponsors get a logo on a banner, but IBM got a lot more than that, and it has been growing it for 30 years.
As one of the main sponsors of the Masters, IBM gets a private cabin and its own TV ads at Augusta National Golf Club. But as sports business analyst Joe Pompliano pointed out on X on April 11, the real value is in the Masters App.
IBM built the Masters app and keeps it running all year with a team of 30 to 35 people. Many people use the app, especially during one busy week each year. Still, the team works on it year-round.
“The Masters sponsorship deal with IBM might be one of the best in all of sports,” Joe Pompliano wrote on X.

As one of the tournament's four primary sponsors, IBM receives a private hospitality cabin to host clients and exclusive access to TV commercial inventory.

This did not begin as the system fans see today. In its early years, IBM handled core digital elements such as the website, basic leaderboards, and limited shot data.
It has grown into a much more detailed system. Every shot is tracked live and sent to the app, and it updates instantly.
Lasers are set up around Augusta, picking up where the ball lands after each shot and logging the exact spot.
The course is mapped using detailed shot data, allowing each shot to be checked against a large database of past shots.
For IBM, the benefit is clear. It gets in front of one of the most valuable audiences in sport, concentrated into a single week.
Pompliano made his view clear on X. “IBM spends millions each year on its Masters sponsorship deal,” he wrote, “and the tournament serves as a global platform for marketing, sales, and client entertainment.”
His conclusion was direct. “That type of partnership is exactly why the two brands are now celebrating their 30th year working together, and it’s something every other event should try to copy.”
