As the PGA Tour season enters into prime time playoff competition, many around the Tour continue to gameplan ahead of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. One in particular being Collin Morikawa who is surprisingly now on his fifth caddie of the season, Mark Urbanek. Sudden caddie change has been a problem within this specific season for the Tour, and seems to only continue on. Prime questions now arise on if Morikawa is struggling to find a caddie match, or does the problem come from within himself. By all means the pro since 2019, will need quick introduction with his new caddie as the playoffs quickly approach.
This is not unfamiliar territory for Morikawa and his camp by any means, now on their fifth caddie of the season. Previous caddies have been seen in JJ Jakovac, Joe Greiner, KK Limbhaust, and Billy Foster. The job of a caddie is one that holds a higher importance than many may truly understand. With their job duties sometimes extending off the golf course and into personal life, seen as in the relationship with Scottie Scheffler and Ted Scott.
“I think this depends on where you are in the rankings,” Morikawa said. “For me right now and where I’m sitting, it’s about fighting and surviving.”
That survival mode will need to be a key motivating factor in this upcoming run, competing with some of the best in the sport. Morikawa is making his first start since back-to-back missed cuts at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open Championship. After a lackluster start to the season, Morikawa slowed down over the second half of the year and will be using the FedExCup Playoffs as a stepping stone ahead of the Ryder Cup and the 2026 TOUR season. Coming in ranked an efficient 19th in the FedExCup to begin the postseason.
After shuffling through a handful of caddies in one season, Morikawa has become a highlight for caddie change. Needing ways to shake that negative light and slow season success, his eyes are set on playing great golf at TPC Southwind.
“It’s been a grind, weeks become so much shorter because of the time you’re putting in,” Morikawa said. “You just step out there knowing you have to relax and take those right steps.”
With the playoffs being a main factor in his post-season motivation, making the Ryder Cup teams also stands tall in importance. With notable names floating around on possible team lineups, Morikawa understands he needs to put forth good golf.
“For me it’s proving to myself I know I’m the golfer that I can be,” Morikawa said. “Good golf takes care of a lot, obviously a huge goal is to make that team and wear that red white and blue.”
Making sure he can ensure himself a spot on that team is key, but over the next three weeks improvement is also needed. Earlier in the season his name would be a clear lock for the Ryder Cup team, yet his recent performances have pushed him back into contender category. The next weeks of tournament competition will be some of the best this season, with lots of inputs at play into the big equation of victory.
