Tiger Woods' DUI arrest on Friday is just the latest in a string of rough incidents for the 50-year-old PGA Tour star.
The 15-time major champion was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Jupiter Island, Florida on Friday. He blew a 0.00 in a breathalyzer, though he ultimately refused to take a urine test. Woods will be taking a step away from golf as a result of his latest arrest.
But Friday's arrest is just the latest in a string of tough incidents. In 2017, Woods was arrested for DUI after he was found asleep at the wheel. In 2021, he was involved in a serious rollover crash, and while he showed signs of impairment, he wasn't arrested.
Of course, there was also the incident back in 2009, when Woods was attacked by his now-ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, in a nasty dispute.
What has contributed to all of these issues for Woods?
ESPN believes that two things are to blame:
"He's gone through a significant loss in the last year and a half of his mom. He's going through a vicious cycle of injury and rehab and the toll that that takes. And, this is another accident. You don't want him to get hurt. You don't want others to get hurt," ESPN's host of The Masters said.
Ultimately, those are not excuses, though. Woods was putting everyone around him at risk by driving under the influence. He needs help.
"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," the 15-time major champion said in a statement posted to his social media accounts Tuesday night. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.
"I'm committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."
