Former LSU Golfer and PGA Tour Winner Battling The Cut Line at PGA Championship
Bill Streitcher

Former LSU golfer and PGA Tour winner, Sam Burns, is battling the cut line heading into his second round of the second major of the year, the PGA Championship.

Burns fired a first round 74 (+2) to finish two shots over par on Thursday morning. As Friday's results started unfolding, the projected cut line to make the weekend was set at one over par, putting Burns just outside at T-78 prior to his Friday round.

Despite the two over score on Thursday, Burns played pretty well. He capitalized on some opportunities and made birdies on 7, 10 and 12, but the final three holes (known as the Green Mile) cost him as he shot two over on 17 and 18.

Burns started the 2025 season off well, making his first six cuts before missing four consecutive heading into the Masters. He shot a one over 73 on Thursday before a two under 70 on Friday to make the cut at Augusta, and since then, he's been on fire, making his last three at the RBC Heritage, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and the Truist Championship.

Burns is still searching for his first win since the 2022-2023 season when he won the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play event. In the year prior, Burns won three times at the Charles Schwab, Valspar Championship and Sanderson Farms Championship.

The five-time PGA Tour champ has yet to win a major, and while he's pretty far down the leaderboard, anything can happen on moving day if he can scratch through and make the cut.

Burns tees off on Friday at 1:20 p.m. CT.
