Augusta National got the better of some of the very best players in the world on day one of The Masters.
The golf course has been subject to nothing but the Georgia sun all week, and that has made it firm and fast. Balls were flying off the back of greens all through Thursday’s play, and it’s only going to get more difficult.
Harry Hall was one of the unfortunate victims to the setup. He shot a five-over 77 in round one, leaving him with plenty of work to do if he wants to make the weekend cut.
And in an attempt to change his fortunes around, the Englishman is making three drastic changes to his golf bag.
Round one of The Masters had Harry Hall questioning everything. He said he’s going to be playing with two drivers in the bag and a new putter after just 18 holes of play.
Hall said, “I’m going to change my driver, I’m going to put two drivers in play tomorrow, different ones. I’m going to put a new putter in play, and go and figure it out on the range.
“I don’t think I spin my irons enough, either. I went into a spinnier ball this week but I still can’t stop it on a dime like I need to. So I probably need to add loft to my irons or do something to compete in these majors.”
Hall, usually an elite putter, lost over a stroke on the greens, but his play off the tee wasn’t too bad. He lost just 0.06 strokes with his driver, so why he’s adding another seems beyond logic.
It was Hall’s play around the greens that was disastrous. He lost 3.23 strokes in that department, the second-worst in the field, so that explains why he was so disappointed with his lack of spin after the round.
Hall explained that he simply isn’t hitting it far enough to give him a good club into the green, and that’s leading to compounding errors. The longer the club you hit on approach, the less likely it is to hold the green, and the worse spots you will be left in around the putting surface.
That goes some way to explaining why Hall’s poor chipping made him want to change drivers. Speaking to reporters, he said, “ I think it played a lot firmer and faster today. You need to hit it far off the tee. I didn’t think you did, but as soon as the greens got firm, you need to hit it as far as possible to have less club in, simple as that.
“I fade the driver that I’ve got in the bag at the moment, and I was driving back to the mini just to draw it off the tee on some of these fairways. When you give up 30 yards, you’re not really being very aggressive.”
Expect Hall to get after it with his driver tomorrow!
