A former PGA Champion’s return to the tour is creating a buzz. Paul Azinger, now a broadcaster, is weighing a comeback at The Concession Golf Club. He has until Friday to decide, and the golf world is watching closely.

Azinger spoke during a media event for the 86th Senior PGA Championship. As a resident, Azinger was taking part in a fireside chat to talk about the tournament coming to Florida.

“Well, I still can play it. That’s what I’ve been realizing. I haven’t gotten back really hooked on golf again until about a year and a half, two years ago, mainly because of my grandson who’s nine. I’m actually hitting it nice and pretty far… I could commit and withdraw, I guess. First alternate would be so happy. Maybe if I don’t like first alternate.”

Well, it’s been over a decade since Paul Azinger teed off on the PGA Tour Champions. And it’s been longer since he won an event. However, he has kept in touch with the sport as an analyst, and there’s no spot better than The Concession Golf Club for Azinger to return to.

That’s because Azinger is among the original members of the Club. He grew up in the Sarasota area, and at the moment, he lives just 40 minutes away from The Concession.

“But I’ve got a couple days to think about it. I don’t know, why wouldn’t I? But then again, why would I?”

Even if he doesn’t play, we know Azinger is excited for the Senior PGA Championship.

Paul Azinger Always Loves Seeing Senior PGA Championship Golfers Arrive

At age 9, Azinger witnessed Jack Nicklaus’ famous gesture to Tony Jacklin during the 1969 Ryder Cup at the same course. And since then, he’s always happy to see golfers visit the area.

“I feel like landing a Senior PGA Championship and having Hall-of-Famers roll into town, every single name is going to be familiar for the most part, and the ones that aren’t familiar really did earn their spot. This is a big deal. It goes back a long time, and it’s the biggest of all, the senior majors. It’s right up there with the Senior U.S. Open.

But that’s not all. Azinger has seen the area transform. He’s happy that the surrounding community will have so much to gain from the event.

“There is probably not many communities growing faster than the Sarasota-Manatee county areas. We’re going to have an economic boom, and this golf tournament is going to be a big reason why.”

For now, Azinger has a deadline: Friday, March 20th. If he decides to play, it will be the incredible return of a major winner who dedicated his life to the sport.
