When the PGA Tour officially canceled the John Deere Classic last week due to the coronavirus pandemic, ESPN's Bob Harig reported the Tour hoped to replace the event originally scheduled for July 9-12 at TPC Deere Run in Illinois for this year only.
It appears that's happened.
On Tuesday, Harig wrote that Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield Village Golf Club, located outside of Columbus, Ohio, will host a tournament in place of the Classic. A full field of 156 players will be invited to participate in the event. Spectators will not be welcomed.
The subsequent week, the same course will host the Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament. A decreased percentage of fans may be allowed to attend that event, but that could change in the weeks and days leading up to the tournament because of the uncontrolled virus outbreak.
In April, the Tour announced its season would resume amid the pandemic next week with the Charles Schwab Challenge at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. While Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has declared a percentage of fans can attend professional sporting events in the state, the Charles Schwab Challenge will occur without spectators.
Even though @GregAbbott_TX announced today that sports stadiums can open to 25% capacity in June, @CSChallengeFW tournament director Michael Tothe tells me it won't affect Colonial. "No changes. No fans. Too late to change."
