In the weeks leading up to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, the Walker Cup saw some of the top amateur golfers in action.
The event, featuring teams from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland, was held at Cypress Point in California.
The USA claimed victory by 17-9 after a strong showing in the final singles session, with several players stepping up when it mattered most.
After watching how things played out, Johnson Wagner found himself particularly intrigued by one American golfer’s performance.
Fans of the PGA Tour might already recognise Jackson Koivun’s name, as he has made seven appearances this season.
Koivun has been in great form recently, finishing inside the top 10 in each of his last three starts: the ISCO Championship, the Wyndham Championship, and more recently at the Procore Championship.
Wagner believes the California native, who is just 20 years old, has all the tools needed to thrive once he makes the full jump from college golf to the professional ranks.
“This Jackson… holy moly. He already has his [PGA Tour] card. He wants to go back for his junior year, probably his senior year at Auburn as well. He got his card through PGA Tour U accelerated.
“I think he’s going to be the best young player that we’ve seen in a generation. I think Jackson Koivun has all the skills. I love his golf swing. I like his demeanor. Every time I watch him play, I’m impressed.
“The ease with which they are going out and getting top 10s and contending in PGA Tour events as amateurs is mind-blowing to me right now.”
Koivun led the way for the USA at Cypress Point, picking up three points to top their scoring chart at the 2025 Walker Cup.
On Saturday morning, he and Tommy Morrison were defeated by Connor Graham and Tyler Weaver in foursomes. However, they exacted their revenge against the same pair on Sunday.
Format | Partner | Opponent | Result |
Foursomes | Tommy Morrison | Connor Graham/Tyler Weaver | Europe 3&1 |
Singles | / | Tyler Weaver | USA 4&3 |
Foursomes | Tommy Morrison | Connor Graham/Tyler Weaver | USA 1up |
Singles | / | Tyler Weaver | USA 3&2 |
The American also delivered two impressive wins in singles play, closing out both matches with five holes still to play.
With a professional career expected to start soon, it is unlikely he will feature in another Walker Cup. But this time around, he certainly made his mark.
