Jordan Spieth has offered a rare look into how seating works at the Masters Champions Dinner, revealing that while no positions are assigned, players still follow a pattern each year.
The annual get-together takes place two days before the beginning of the tournament at Augusta National Golf Club and brings the past winners together.
Rory McIlroy will host and set the menu this year. He is drawing ideas from his mother, Rosie, but the seating dynamic remains consistent even if the food changes.
Speaking ahead of the Valspar Championship, Spieth compared the experience to school, saying, “It’s kind of like, you know, 6th, 7th grade, where if the teacher has assigned seats, you get all bummed, and if they let you sit wherever you want, you end up sitting in the same spot anyway. It’s kind of the same deal.”
After winning the Masters in 2015, Spieth finally earned his place, finishing ahead of Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose by four shots. He has returned each year since, eventually learning how the room works.
He explained that players naturally settle into the same areas over time. Even without a fixed seating plan, a consistent pattern emerges.
Spieth also mentioned that certain parts of the table, especially those linked to Jack Nicklaus, are quietly respected.
The same goes for spots associated with Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer, which players tend to avoid.
He added, “It’s kind of the same deal. Sit with Scottie, but then when Scottie wins, you know, he’s done that twice in the last few years,” referring to Scottie Scheffler and how a defending champion’s role can shift positioning.
Scheffler gave a similar insight, noting that while players are free to move, there is still a level of protocol that the players follow in their seating.
He said players don’t really pick seats. They just drift back to the same spots.
During his first time hosting, Scheffler said he only knew he’d be sitting next to Ben Crenshaw and Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley. Everything else, he had to figure out as it went.
That’s how the dinner works. Nothing is spelled out, but everyone seems to understand it.
Where do you think Jordan Spieth will end up sitting at the 2026 Champions Dinner?
