If Jordan Spieth is forced to withdraw from a PGA Tour event, there has to be a pretty significant reason. Since turning pro in 2012, Spieth, a three-time major championship winner, had never withdrawn from a tournament.
That changed at the 2025 Travelers Championship, as the 31-year-old was forced to remove himself from the action for the first time in 297 starts on the tour on Thursday, June 19.
Spieth said he initially felt pain during warmups on Thursday, so he opted to get treatment before beginning the round, as Yahoo Sports reported. After gutting it out through 12 holes, he teed off on No. 13 and immediately let out a loud grunt from the pain, withdrawing shortly after.

Spieth addressed his decision to withdraw and explained what happened at the Travelers Championship in a post on social media Thursday night.
"During warmup, my right scap tightened and despite trying to push through, pain spread to my neck and upper back. By 13 tee, I realized I had to stop. I’ve never had to WD before, and hate that it happened at @TravelersChamp - a tournament I love. Thanks everyone for the support!" Spieth wrote on X.
Following his withdrawal, Spieth spoke about trying to see if he could "somehow get through at even," before the pain worsened, as Yahoo Sports highlighted.
"As I was out there playing, I couldn't, I just wasn't moving very well, and then it just got worse," he said. "I was just going to try to see if I could somehow get through at even. It's a weird situation with an elevated event and no cut and important points and stuff," Spieth explained.
"It's like, well, what's the downside if I can finish off just finishing even if it's ugly, and then I hit my tee shot on 13, and it legitimately really hurt ... I was like, it's only going to get worse to finish the round, and it's not worth it. I thought that was the time."
It's unknown if the injury will sideline Spieth for any additional time. The Rocket Classic at the Detroit Golf Club is the next PGA Tour event on the schedule (June 26-29), followed by the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run (July 3-6).
