Oakmont Country Club is finally showing its teeth at the U.S. Open this Friday, and unfortunately for Justin Thomas, he's the course's first major victim.
Coming into this week's major championship, Scottie Scheffler called Oakmont Country Club "probably the hardest golf course that we'll play." Bryson DeChambeau also spoke highly about this course and how it'll test every participant in the field.
"I think everybody knows this is probably the toughest golf course in the world right now," DeChambeau said, via ESPN. "You have to hit the fairways, you have to hit greens, and you have to two-putt, worst-case scenario. When you've got those putts inside 10 feet, you've got to make them. It's a great test of golf."
Thomas, a two-time major champion, knew he'd have to make a serious move up the leaderboard this Friday in order to make the cut. After all, he finished the opening round at 6-over-par.
While there's still time for Thomas to end this Friday's round on a high note, his performance on the par-5 12th hole may have sealed his fate.
Thomas was facing a 22-foot putt for birdie on the 12th hole. Instead, he found himself scrambling for double bogey.
The par putt attempt for Thomas resulted in a brutal lip-out. If that wasn't bad enough, he was dealt one more for good measure.
Oakmont is relentless.

Thomas is currently at 9-over-par for the tournament. He's well below the cut line at this time.
This has been a rough season for Thomas, who missed the cut at the PGA Championship in May.
Unfortunately for Thomas, he'll have to go back to the drawing board after this week's performance.
