Justin Thomas launches his driver off the box after errant tee shot at Travelers Championship

Justin Thomas is in contention at the Travelers, entering the 13th hole on Saturday four back of Tommy Fleetwood at nine-under. Thomas wanted a nice tee shot to set him up at a place where he scored a par on Thursday and a birdie on Friday. Instead, things went incredibly wrong for him, mixed in with a club throw.

A shot at the tee box flew out left into the trees. Thomas, understandably frustrated with him, followed through on his swing before the driver also went flying left. A tournament employee was standing in the general direction as well but thankfully avoided getting hit.

Thomas yelled out “FORE LEFT” before the CBS microphones picked him up apologizing to the man. He went to pick up the club and back over to his caddy so the rest of the group could play their shots. You can check out the full moment here.

Results did not get much better from there. Thomas wound up with a quadruple bogey nine. Four shots were dropped and maybe ruined his opportunity to make a late run at taking the lead heading into the final round. His score for the weekend now sits at five-under.

Overall, a tough hole for Thomas on multiple fronts. A big bounce back will be needed from him in the final five holes to make any kind of push on Fleetwood on Sunday.

Justin Thomas playing well throughout 2025 season

For the most part, Thomas has been one of the more consistent golfers during the 2025 season. Yes, he is likely going to want more out of his performances at majors. Thomas missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and US Open while finishing tied for 36th at the Masters.

But everywhere else, the results have been quite good. Thomas has finished in the top 10 of six different tournaments. He turned the RBC Heritage into a win as well, his first victory on Tour since the 2022 PGA Championship.

With this being a Ryder Cup year, people will be happy to see Thomas playing well. He currently holds an automatic spot on the team, sitting in fifth place in the Ryder Cup standings. A critical one is ahead of the United States, needing to get a win at Bethpage against the Europeans. Thomas appears set to once again be a part of the equation for caption Keegan Bradley.
