Ludvig Aberg came up short once again on Sunday at the Valero Texas Open.

Aberg posted a final round 70 on day four of the Valero Texas Open but it wasn’t enough as J.J. Spaun won his third PGA Tour title.

The 26-year-old Swede has endured real disappointment on the PGA Tour over the past few weeks.

Aberg threw away the lead at The Players Championship last month and he failed to get over the line once again on Sunday at the Valero Texas Open.

He finished in a tie for fifth and three late birdies actually flattered him in the end. The two-time PGA Tour winner was nowhere near good enough during the final round at TPC San Antonio and he will be fully aware of that fact.

Aberg was swinging the club beautifully at the Valero Texas Open earlier this week, but the his third and fourth rounds went on, the shakier he started to look.

Questions will now be asked of the Swede’s inability to get over the line when it really matters.

Aberg has to find a way of performing better during final rounds of tournaments.

Given the game he possesses, he should have won so many more times in his career to date.

Perhaps the reason he doesn’t win regularly is that he lacks the killer instinct some of his main rivals possess.

Sky Sports commentator Andrew Coltart criticized Aberg for his reaction to his tee shot on the driveable par-four 17th hole.

There is no doubt he’s a talent but the talent that he does possess, he should have had some better Sundays and more of a return based on what he’s got and what he possesses, he said.

That is just his fifth green in regulation today. I don’t know about you but I would be livid with that.

Coltart’s co-commentator John Swantek then weighed in with his opinion.

I was about to say it’s almost as if you would want to see him a bit more irritated, he said.

To which Coltart replied: Yeah, you don’t want to be smiling after a round like that.

Does Ludvig Aberg have a mentality issue?

That’s actually a really astute observation from Coltart.

Some may say he was slightly harsh on Aberg but the truth of the matter is that there must be a reason why he hasn’t won more than twice on the PGA Tour.

The Swede is a great driver of the ball, a superb fairway wood player and very consistent with his irons.

Meanwhile, his chipping and pitching technique is faultless, and his putting stroke is smoother than silk.

Perhaps he does need to develop more of a ‘nasty side’ so to speak or at least show more emotion when things aren’t going well for him.

Ludvig Aberg flattered to deceive during the final round of the Valero Texas Open and unfortunately for him, that is becoming an all too familiar story.
