Ludvig Aberg reveals his choice for golf’s best driver above McIlroy and DeChambeau

When it comes to driving the ball, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau are often the first names that come to mind in the modern game.

Justin Thomas and Adam Scott have even gone as far as calling McIlroy the greatest driver ever, praising not just his power but his consistency over so many years.

DeChambeau’s accuracy might not always be there, but no one questions his raw distance. He has redefined what is possible off the tee in a way few others have.

Despite that, Ludvig Aberg has pointed to someone else entirely when asked who he thinks is the best driver in the world.

Ludvig Aberg picks Scottie Scheffler as the best driver in golf

Aberg shared his thoughts on Scottie Scheffler’s game during an episode of On The Bag with Dan Rapaport.

He pointed out that what stands out most about the world number one is his face control, calling it a key part of what separates him from other players.

“I think you can always look at the way he moves and how unconventional it might look, but if you look at the way he actually swings, it’s ridiculously good.

“The biggest thing that stands out when I look at his swing is the face control. Obviously, he moves laterally a lot more than most guys, but his face control is next level. That stands out to me,” Aberg said.

The Swede also praised how consistent Scheffler can be, noting that he often shoots six-under-par rounds without needing anything spectacular to happen.

“I think the simplicity of the way he plays. He understands when to hit shots and how to hit them. He’s really good at the boring stuff, hitting the same shot over and over.

“And it gets to the point where, ‘You know what, I need to hit the 6-iron up to the moon to stop it, and I’ll do it.’ It doesn’t always look mega spectacular.

“And then he gets hot with the putter, rolls a few in, and it’s five- or six-under. That’s the part that I’m really impressed by.”

Aberg even went as far as to say that despite other strengths in his game standing out more, Scheffler is clearly “the best driver in the world”.

“We all know he’s got more speed in the tank. He plays a 178-80 mph ball speed with a little cut, and he’s fine with it. Obviously, he’s the best driver in the world,” the Swede stated.

Scheffler is widely respected for his approach play, but not as much for driving compared to names like McIlroy or DeChambeau.

Ludvig Aberg appreciates Scottie Scheffler’s character

Beyond the golf course, Aberg has spoken before about his admiration for how Scheffler carries himself despite all the attention that comes with success.

It is common to see professional athletes change as their profiles grow, but Scheffler has stayed grounded, keeping his focus on family and maintaining a low-key presence in the sport.

Even if he does not have the most dynamic personality in the game, there is a lot to be said for how he handles himself both on and off the course.

“Obviously, his golf speaks for itself. We’ve all seen it. We’ve all watched him win multiple tournaments over and over again, and it seems like he’s doing it with such ease now.

“I feel like he’s really figured out how to find the extra gear when he needs to. All those things are really impressive. I haven’t known him that long, maybe two years, and his rise has been quite substantial.

“He’s always been the same person ever since. I think that’s more impressive because he’s got a lot of reasons to change the way he views things.

“From the outside looking in, it doesn’t seem that way. It seems like he’s very grounded. He cares about the things he cares about and nothing else.

“That’s more impressive than winning 14 events in two years. Staying true to yourself is a big challenge, and it seems like he’s doing a really good job of that.”
