The 2024 Masters provided the perfect stage for Ludvig Aberg to show that he is a superstar in the making.
The Swede was making his major championship debut at the event. He had provided an indication of his talent with his performance at the Ryder Cup the previous year.
But he was not far away from becoming the first player to win on his Masters debut since 1979. Aberg finished second, with his hopes realistically ending when he found the water on 11.
Although he finished seventh the following year, Aberg found himself in a fantastic position as Rory McIlroy seemingly did all he could to throw the title away at Augusta National.
It was only a triple bogey on the final hole which took the shine off the 26-year-old’s performance.
Those performances suggest that Aberg has the tools to win the green jacket one day. So perhaps it is no surprise that he told Skratch that he is a huge fan of the iconic course.
“Yeah I do [love Augusta], absolutely love it. There’s so many smart things about Augusta that’s so underrated,” he said.
“So many key shots, like number 10 for example. I love that hole because obviously, you’ve got to turn it over off the tee. If you really take it on and you turn it over, you get a flat lie going up against the green that looks a little bit like this, but if you don’t, you bail out, you have a ball above your feet to a green which looks like this [front left to back right] with a front bunker that’s dead.
“13, unbelievable golf hole. You have the ball above your feet and obviously right’s no good and the wind’s almost always in off your left, so you have to hit a ball that goes this way to that wind.”
Aberg is based in Ponte Vedra. With that, his home course is TPC Sawgrass, the home of The Players Championship.
It is the flagship event on the PGA Tour. And it is the site of perhaps the most famous par three on the calendar – outside of the majors. The 17th hole has provided numerous memorable moments over the years.
And Aberg suggested that with the par five 16th and the treacherous 18th either side of it, TPC Sawgrass ticks all the right boxes.
“It’s a cool environment to come into. Obviously, you’ve got grandstands all along this side, it’s like a stadium. I’m a little bit biased because I live here and I play here all the time, but I think this is the best finish in golf because if you pull off the shots, you can quite easily make three, two, three. But you can also make six, six, six like that. I just like that straightforwardness, here you go, it’s a nine iron to the centre of the green. You’ve got to hit it, but if you don’t, you’re going to get punished,” he said.
“I’ve never hit it in the water [on 17]. I’ve played it a few years now. I’ve hit it in the water in practice rounds. Tournament week, I think I’m three under for my career, something like that.”
Aberg is yet to crack the top 10 at The Players Championship, having finished 16th and 21st in his two appearances so far.
You certainly would not be shocked to see him contend at some stage in the near future.
