Back in March, the no 1. Amateur player has earned his Tour card at the Zurich Classic. Later, he made his professional debut at the RBC Canadian Open. Where he was more star-struck than nervous about making an appearance, now that he is settling into the world of professional golf, there are quite a few questions revolving around Luke Clanton. One of which is whether playing for prize money will change him in any way. To which Clanton answered with a definitive no.
When it comes to Luke Clanton, he has only been playing professionally for a month. Still bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. The only reason he waited a couple of months before officially going pro was that the spring semester hadn’t wrapped up yet. When he did finally go pro, he didn’t treat it like a big ego trip. He was more like a kid getting to meet Spider-Man when he played at the RBC Canadian Open. A lot was happening at that event, too, despite being the one right before a major. It was an event that saw a player leave for his growing family, another make one of his final appearances, and yet another make a small return to a PGA event.
Luke Clanton was asked about how the prize money affected him after going pro. Specifically, he was asked if playing for money made him feel different.
“Absolutely nothing.” Clanton said, “Same thing for me. Going out here to compete against the best. You know, I think a dollar sign would not change my point of view on anything.“
Clanton was then asked if his perspective had changed in any way.
“Again, no, not really. It’s still a game at the end of the day. I think, yeah, obviously it’s my job now. It’s a pretty incredible job to have to be able to go out and play golf every day. Again, you can say it’s a job, but it’s not really a job. We’re going out to play golf. It’s pretty amazing. So, yeah.“
There was another interview Clanton had done on the Golf Channel for The Scoop, where he stated that playing pro was easier than college golf. Mostly due to how his schedule is just golf and training for golf, and he loves golf. For Luke Clanton, the prize money just means he doesn’t have to worry about bills.
Clanton is the kind of player who is there because he just loves the sport that much. The fans and other players like seeing him on the field, too. Clanton is the kind of guy who will keep himself grounded in the face of all the praise he has been receiving. There is an old saying that says, “If You Love What You Do, You’ll Never Work A Day In Your Life.” Clanton fits into that old saying. Sure, he will tell people that golf is his job now, but he will also tell everyone that this is the best job he has ever had.
