The Mexico Open is hardly a premier PGA event. The reasons for that are varied but it does not change the fact that this is the lowest rated field we have seen this season.
Jon Rahm is the headliner, so if you are going to win you're still going to have to beat a very good golfer, but he has recently slid from 1st to 3rd in the World Golf Rankings.
When you look at the odds this field is pretty wide open after Rahm. I can't recall such a massive gap between #1 (Rahm +450) and #2 (Abraham Ancer +1800) in the odds table. Usually, it's more like +750 and +1200. This is going to be an interesting weekend for sure.
Rahm is the only top ten player in the field, so the number seems well justified. He is going to play for 4 days against somebody though.
This is the first year this event is officially part of the PGA Tour.
Date: Apr 28–May 1, 2022
Course: Vidanta Vallarta
Purse: $7,300,000
Matt Jones +4000
If you are not going with Rahm there might not be a bad bet to make this weekend. This course should suit Jones pretty well because of his ability to drive it long and keep it within the wide fairways.
Martin Trainer +44000
That number is not a typo. Trainer is not usually in the running. But he actually has a couple of top-10 finishes this season (just don't look at his other efforts, or look away from them more accurately).
Gary Woodland +2200
I am hearing a lot of buzz for Woodland this week with the reduced competition in the field. He might have missed the cut at the Masters but three top-10 finishes and a couple of top fives are more indicative of what he can do.
Abraham Ancer +1800
There are lots of different odds on Ancer in the marketplace so definitely shop around. He is second in odds so don't let that big number throw you. He is not in great form right now but last year his play picked up in April/May so maybe that is a thing. There is a reason the oddsmakers think he is the next best bet after Rahm.
