Marlins exercise ace Sandy Alcantara's 2027 club option

It's time to saddle up as the Miami Marlins have exercised their 2027 club option with Sandy Alcantara, worth $21 million.

Alcantara will become an unrestricted free agent following the 2027 season.

The 31-year-old sported a 13-11 record with a 3.87 ERA with 153 strikeouts across 214 innings pitched, illustrating his continued reputation as a reliable and durable workhorse on the mound.

His 214 innings pitched led the league and is the second-most innings he has pitched in his career. It only trails his league-leading 228 and 2/3 innings pitched in his All-Star campaign in 2022.

Sandy Alcantara's 2027 club option could signal contract extension

The Marlins' decision to keep Alcantara for another season signals that a contract extension will likely be in the works for the 2022 Cy Young winner in the near future. He will also likely be slated to be the team's Opening Day starter in 2027.

Over the last few seasons, Alcantara has been a highly-coveted trade asset who has gained significant attention from several teams. But he has continued to remain in a Marlins uniform, helping to anchor the team's rotation.

Picking up his club option comes as no surprise, as he showcased elite resiliency and a resurged performance in 2026, following his second season returning from Tommy John surgery.

While Alcantara only logged a 17.1% strikeout rate this season, his 6.6% walk rate and 41.9 % ground-ball rate highlighted his dominance and solid control on the mound.
