PGA Tour 2022: Farmers Insurance Open betting preview

Last week we saw a bunch of low scores at the American Express. Five golfers finished at -20 or better with American Hudson Swafford getting just his third career PGA Tour win. Betting favorite Jon Rahm finished tied for 14th. 

Rahm (+750) is the betting favorite again this week, but we have more "stars" in the field with Bryson DeChambeau (+1100) competing as well as Dustin Johnson (+2600). Rahm won this event in 2017, and Jason Day has won here twice. Day is in the field at +10000, if you can believe it.

Last year Patrick Reed won the event. He is +5000 this week and has not won a PGA Tour event since. We have not seen a repeat champ recently, but past course form is always a good indicator.  

One thing to note is that this is a rare tournament that is a Wednesday to Saturday format. The PGA does not want to compete with the NFL conference championship games on Sunday. That is definitely the smart play given the run the NFL is on right now.

Some Bets to Consider

Tony Finau to Finish in the Top 25 (+150)

Finau has never won this event but has performed well on this course and is one of the most consistent players on the tour. His worst performance at the event was a 24th-place finish back in 2014, and he has placed in the top 10 multiple times. 

Bryson DeChambeau to Win (+1100)

He is the biggest personality on the tour, and everyone either loves or hates him. He can play though, and despite not making the cut in the past at Torrey Pines, the course is generally favorable for someone like him who can really drive the ball. If you are a hater, then take a pass even though the value is there. I hate making bets that my heart doesn't agree with. 

Ryan Palmer to Finish Top 20 (+220)

Palmer might not be a household name, but he has had lots of success at Torrey Pines, including two second-place finishes in the last four years. +8000 would be a sweet payoff if you want to back him to finally break through and win the event, but this is a much safer bet. 

Tom Hoge (+8000)

Hoge finished second last week at the American Express so he is in as good of form as almost anyone heading into this event. He has two top-five finishes already this season, and maybe things break right for him to get his first PGA Tour win.
