PGA Tour 2022: Rocket Mortgage Classic betting guide

Last week, we had a limited field at the 3M Open. We also had the favorite, Tony Finau, win for the first time on the PGA Tour. Still, that momentum was not enough to put him at the top of the odds this week — not with a top-five player in the field.

That distinction is going to Patrick Cantlay who is currently ranked fourth in the World Golf Rankings. That duo leads another relatively light field in Detroit.

The FedEx playoffs are still just around the corner, so all players in the middle tiers are scrambling to get as many points as possible. Nobody can afford to sacrifice a round with only top-125 players qualifying. (Yes, I know that sounds like a lot.)

This week's course plays pretty straight, so even though a lot of top names are not here, it is probably going to be those we are familiar with who land in the money. You don't need to be very special in one particular area to be in the hunt. An all-around game will do just fine.

Bets to consider

Will Zalatoris 14-1

Now that Finau has won one, Zalatoris might be the best player on the Tour to have never won an event. Last year, he looked great in Detroit for a couple of rounds, but then struggled late in the tourney. There is no reason he can't have a more consistent effort and grab the title this time around.

Max Homa 22-1

Homa looks underpriced this week. Unlike Zalatoris above, he has actually won on the PGA Tour. Multiple times actually including a second Wells Fargo Championship win earlier this year. He just should be priced a little lower given the modest field. He's probably the best value on the board this week.

Patrick Cantlay Top Ten +140

He is at the top of the odds table, so backing him is not a shock, but I love this derivative bet. You can still double your money with a player who has nine top-10 finishes already this season. That is in just 16 events too. It is OK to go for some simple payoffs sometimes too, not always a home run.

Russell Henley 42-1

Henley is just off the top odds board above. The reason he grabbed my attention is that this event usually plays like a birdie fest, and that is his specialty. He has won on the Tour before, even though it has been a while (2017). If you are looking to make a small play that might deliver a big payoff, this is a good one.

Cam Young Top 20 +115

Young has struggled with consistency of late. He was great and finished second at the Open Championship the last time we saw him, but the three events before that included two missed cuts and a 60th-place finish. The three events before that were two thirds and a second. The talent is there, and with this wager, we don't need him to necessarily be in the hunt to win it. Just to play well.
