Legendary golfer Phil Mickelson continues to do the unthinkable, competing at another major championship despite

Legendary golfer Phil Mickelson continues to defy expectations, competing in another major championship at the age of 55.

The lefty shot one under par through the first round at Royal Portrush and delivered a jaw-dropping moment on the third hole. Mickelson was facing a likely bogey, but he hit a vintage flop shot that landed 15 feet from the pin, spun left, and dropped into the cup for an unbelievable par.

The broadcast and fans watching erupted as Mickelson showed his excitement with a smile, while raising both arms in the air and tipping his cap.

"That was a crazy one. It was really one of maybe two poor shots I hit, I felt,” Mickelson said. “That bunker shot that buried in the lip, and then to make it, it was obviously a lot of luck. It was crazy. I was just trying to save bogey, and I got lucky and it went.”

It’s Mickelson’s 129th major championship start, with his first one coming in 1990. He’s won six majors throughout his career, and for him to still be playing at a high level in 2025 proves how dedicated he is to remaining in professional shape.

Through 18 holes, Mickelson’s 70 (-1) marks his best round at an Open since 2018 and his first sub-par major round since 2023.

As the iconic player continues to defy odds, his ability to turn disasters into opportunities keeps him a fan favorite. At this rate, don’t count out Mickelson from making a run at this tournament.
