A group of protesters ran onto the 18th green at TPC River Highlands to interrupt the conclusion of the Travelers Championship on Sunday in Cromwell, Conn.

The final group of golfers, including tournament leader Scottie Scheffler and second-place Tom Kim of South Korea, were reading their putts on the final hole of the event when people ran out of the gallery and onto the field of play. They spread red and white powder or paint onto the green, including near the cup.

Police handcuffed at least five people, according to CBS play-by-play man Jim Nantz.

It was unclear what the people were protesting.

Play continued shortly after they were removed from the hole. Scheffler narrowly missed a birdie putt that would have won the tournament. Kim — who, mere moments before the protest, stuck his approach shot feet away from the pin — then converted his birdie try to force a two-man playoff.

Akshay Bhatia was the third player in the group.
