This week, Rory McIlroy is teeing off in Ireland. The 5-time major champion is playing in the 2025 Amgen Irish Open around three weeks before the 2025 Ryder Cup. During the press conference, the golfer claimed that winning an away Ryder Cup would make 2025 the “best year” of his career.

The year 2025 has been one of the most successful ones for McIlroy. After winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and capturing his 2nd The Players Championship, the former World No.1 finally got his hands on the one trophy he wanted.

In April, McIlroy finally overcame his demons of the Augusta National Golf Course and took down Justin Rose in the playoff round to win the Masters Tournament. He would win the coveted green jacket for the first time in his career and complete the career grand slam.

Earlier this year, McIlroy opened up about the 3 goals he had. One was to win an Olympic Gold, one was to win the Masters Tournament, and the final one was to win another Ryder Cup.

This year, McIlroy and Team Europe will be looking to go back-to-back. While the Northern Irishman has not won since his triumph at the Masters, he believes victory at the Bethpage Course later this month will make 2025 the best year of his golfing career.

If we (Team Europe) were to win an away Ryder Cup with everything else that I’ve been through this year, 2025 would be the best year of my career.

Rory McIlroy said

Team Europe does not have a good record in America in the past decade. Since their last win during the “Miracle at Medinah” in 2012, they have lost the next two tournaments on U.S. soil by huge margins.

Rory McIlroy comments on Sergio Garcia’s decision to withdraw from Irish Open due to Ryder Cup snub

This past Monday, Team Europe captain Luke Donald announced his six picks. He would select Shane Lowry , Jon Rahm , Sepp Straka , Ludvig Aberg , Viktor Hovland , and Matt Fitzpatrick . This saw Sergio Garcia being snubbed from the team.

The 11-time PGA Tour winner would get notified about this snub from Donald around 2 weeks ago. He thus decided to withdraw from the Irish Open this week.

During the event, McIlroy was asked about this decision by the Spanish golfer. The World No.2, who has himself skipped a few events in recent years, backed the LIV Golfer.

It would have been great for the tournament if Sergio had played. But obviously he was trying to keep himself sharp, if he did get a pick. He has the right to enter and pull out of any tournaments he wants to… I’m sure he (Garcia) is disappointed, but at the same time, I’m sure he wishes Europe well and wants us to win

Rory McIlroy said

Garcia was not part of the 2023 team due to his ties with LIV Golf. No European golfer from LIV appeared in the event in Rome. The Fireballs GC captain is the leading point scorer for Team Europe in this event, with 28.5 points from 10 appearances.

Rory McIlroy urges his Ryder Cup teammates to channel Novak Djokovic’s energy to face hostile US crowd

In a few weeks, Rory McIlroy and his Ryder Cup teammates will fly to New York to take on Team USA at the Bethpage Course. Knowing the hostile reception they will receive, the golfer has urged his teammates to channel Novak Djokovic‘s energy.

The 2025 Masters Champion spoke highly of the Serbian tennis star. He revealed that Djokovic would give him and his teammates a speech before the event in 2023 in Rome.

This week, the tennis great continued to impress the fans with his performances. He would take down American international Taylor Fritz in the U.S. Open quarter-final and would silence the U.S. crowd, who were loudly rooting for his opponent.

It was a very pro-American crowd. He’s been the best at handling that. He’s had to deal with it his whole life, whether it’s playing against an American in New York or playing against Roger [Federer] or Rafa [Nadal]. He came and spoke to us a little bit about that stuff last time in Rome, so maybe [it’s about] taking a leaf out of his book and channeling that energy the right way.

Rory McIlroy told the reporters

Djokovic will now turn his attention towards Carlos Alcaraz . The two European stars will face off in the semi-final on Friday.
