Rory McIlroy has the biggest 36-hole lead in Masters history, but Augusta has seen big leads disappear before.
Augusta is also where Rory McIlroy had his toughest moment. In 2011, he started Sunday with a four-shot lead but shot 80 and fell out of contention, something that still stays with him.
“I know what can happen around here, good and bad,” he said. “You don’t have to remind me not to get ahead of myself.”
On Friday, he played his best golf late in the round, making six birdies in his last seven holes, including four in a row to finish, to reach 12-under and lead by six shots over Patrick Reed and Sam Burns, with Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, and Shane Lowry seven shots back in a tie for fourth.
McIlroy walked off the course knowing very well what a six-shot lead at Augusta can mean.
His plan for Saturday is simple, and this time he is not going to play it safe.
“Don’t protect it,” McIlroy said. “Go out and play freely, keep swinging.”
Now the number that changes everything: in recent Masters, every winner was within four shots of the lead at the halfway mark. McIlroy’s nearest challenger is six back, and no one is within four.
Reed said what everyone was thinking as he walked off on Friday. “Depends on how Rory finishes up at the end.”
Fleetwood, seven back, isn’t giving up. “If the conditions are going to be like this, it definitely gives more people a chance,” he said. Someone always makes a move on Saturday at Augusta, but this year’s gap makes that scenario harder to picture.
Reed won here in 2018, and Rose has a U.S. Open title, is ranked ninth in the world, and has been in two Masters playoffs.
Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship, and Wyndham Clark, tied for seventh and eight back, also holds a U.S. Open title. With a late tee time Saturday, his thoughts were measured.
“Obviously, it’s a long way to go,” Lowry said. “I have a late tee time on Saturday afternoon. That’s always a nice place to be in.”
