Rory McIlroy posted a round of three-under par 66 on day two at Aronimink.
While a very good score, there was nothing special about it in the grand scheme of things, on the surface at least.
The 37-year-old Northern Irishman followed that round up with another fine effort on Saturday, posting a four-under par 66 to trail the leader by just three shots heading into the final round.
Rory McIlroy has been nowhere near his brilliant best at the PGA Championship this week, but he is well in the race to win the tournament.
That is very similar to Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods during their heydays.
Even when they didn’t have their best stuff in the major championships, they would almost always still contend, and sometimes even win.
Many golfers have struggled at the PGA Championship this week.
McIlroy suggested the setup at Aronimink has been poor this week, but many golf fans disagree with that sentiment.
Despite the challenging conditions, the Northern Irishman has still managed to write his name down in the record books once again.
Heading into the second round at Aronimink, McIlroy had posted 42 rounds of 67 or better in major championships, tied for second on the all-time list with Nicklaus.
However, after shooting 67 on Friday, he overtook the Golden Bear.
Then he posted a 66 on Saturday and now has 44 rounds of 67 or lower in majors to his name.
Woods leads the list with 48 and it surely won’t be long until McIlroy breaks the great man’s record.
McIlroy is already part of two very exclusive clubs alongside Woods and Nicklaus.
The six-time major winner is one of only six men in the history of the game to have completed the career Grand Slam.
He is also one of only four men to have ever defended The Masters title, alongside Nicklaus, Woods and Sir Nick Faldo.
Rory McIlroy has been the dominant force in the game over the past 10-15 years.
He has certainly been the most consistent golfer throughout that period.
And if he has the hunger to compete for another decade or so, there’s no reason why he won’t go on to break many more records in the game.
