Rory McIlroy is dominating the 2026 Masters, but his most telling moment came after the second round. His message to amateur partner Mason Howell spoke volumes about mentorship between a legend and a rising star.
While Rory McIlroy leads the way, he did not fail to find a chance to inspire and encourage his young playing partner, 2025 U.S. Amateur champion Mason Howell, during their joint Friday rounds.
McIlroy shared a personal moment with him as they walked off the 18th green during the second round. “Rory was awesome. He said, I hope to see you down the line. We’ll play some practice rounds coming up,” Howell said during the post-round presser.
“We’ll play some practice rounds coming up. So, couldn’t have been more thankful to be paired with Rory this week and how much I learned from his game,” said the 18-year-old.
Unfortunately for the Masters debutant, things didn’t go well in the second round. Howell hit four bogeys and one double bogey, totaling 77 and missing the cut.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy made it into the record books when he took a remarkable six-shot lead after posting a 7-under 65. At 12-under par, the defending champion is leading, having set a record for the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history.
His journey to the Masters began with a crucial win at the U.S. Amateur where he realized that a victory would secure a historic pairing with McIlroy at Augusta National.
“Once I kind of got in cruise control in the Finals, I got to realize what I had the opportunity to do,” commented Howell on his route to the Masters.
The young amateur was impressed with McIlroy’s surreal performance, especially in watching him birdie his last four holes to open up the gap between the Northern Irishman and other players.
“Monday night staying in the Crow’s Nest, that was awesome,” Howell noted, appreciating the more traditional aspects of the amateur game regardless of the pressure he was under on such a big international stage.
With the Walker Cup and the challenging summer ahead for him, the encounter he had on Friday will undoubtedly motivate him for years to come to join back with the pros.
