Masters champion Rory McIlroy had to deal with a ton of abuse from fans during the Ryder Cup in 2025. It got so bad that the PGA had to bring in extra state troopers to manage the obnoxious, unruly fans who continuously heckled him.
McIlroy faced intense, hostile heckling at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, including personal insults about his family, vulgar chants, and distracting noises. Before a shot on the 16th hole, Rory could be seen telling disrespectful fans to “shut the f–k up.”
Spectators also used squeaky rubber ducks during his backswing and counted down during his pre-shot routine. Despite the intense atmosphere, McIlroy and Team Europe powered through and came out victorious.
The 2025 crowd crossed the line from passionate support to abuse, which he deemed unacceptable in the sport. He wasn’t the only one who had to deal with it.
Europe topped the United States in the 2025 Ryder Cup. It did not come without its issues. McIlroy, Team Europe, and his wife were on the receiving end of some vulgar taunts.
His European teammate, Bob MacIntyre, was amazed by Erica and her “unbelievable” reaction to the taunting fans.
“On Saturday on the sixth hole, Rory and Shane’s group stopped and didn’t hit a shot for about 10 minutes,” MacIntyre told GolfDigest.
“I was in the team room doing some physio, and I said, ‘We need to go out there.’ I rounded up about 10 of us-players, caddies, staff, so that Rory and Shane weren’t just seeing hostile fans everywhere they looked.”
“Honestly, it was Erica who amazed me most. She was sitting in the back of that buggy like an absolute trooper, not flinching,” he said of her. That was key to their victory.
“If she reacted, Rory would have reacted-and if the two of them reacted, the crowd would have won. She was unbelievable.”
Since then, McIlroy has won his second consecutive Masters Tournament. He finished at 12-under par, defeating Scottie Scheffler by one stroke to become the fourth player in history to win back-to-back Masters.
