Week after week in the PGA Tour we see excellence, this weekend it turned out to be a first ever career victory setting for Ryan Fox. Fox was able to grab his first Tour victory, with a sweet chip in birdie to steal the win at the Myrtle Beach Classic. The competition over the weekend came as expected, tough players who were either looking to add to the win column or grab their first victories like Fox. The clutch win for the 38-year-old not only was the highlight of the day, but good enough to punch his ticket in next week’s PGA Championship.
A tournament that will have some of the top names in the sport, all expecting to perform at the highest level possible. Now having gotten a taste of victory, Fox should be able to go into the tournament more confident and relaxed in his play throughout. His number was finally called, now opening the door for a career of more awaited victories.
Fox in impressive fashion, started his dreams and ended some of his companions with a birdie. Having to take things to playoff holes with two other athletes, Fox was still able to get things done with heightened pressure. A feeling he expressed to the media after the big win, but nothing he is ashamed of by any means.
“Even though I’ve been nervous the whole time, I was nervous out there today, you just go through the process. I know that’s really cliche, but it’s cliche for a reason. It works,” Fox said. “Go up, focus on just trying to hit the shot I’m going to hit and see what happens from there. I did a really good job of that the last sort of eight holes today. If I get another chance, I’ll do the same thing.”
Through 68 events played in the Career of Fox, he has made 47 total cuts with the most recent being key. Having a lengthy run in this sport to date, Fox put on display a show of generational talent. Talent that has kept him in this sport for some time and now paid off with his first victory.
Walking away with a $1.2 million dollar payout is just the start for Fox and his crew. Now granted a two-year exemption in the PGA Tour, and a chance at this upcoming PGA Championship.
“I’ve played all of them (majors) the last two years and was gutted to have missed the Masters this year, so I knew there was one spot going this week and the only way to get it was to win, so I’m chuffed with that,” Fox said.
With the future bright as can be for the newest Tour winner, the focus needs to remain at an all time high. It will be key for Fox to not get complacent in his play, or hunger for more future career victories. All eyes will be on the veteran for some time to come in his quest for more achievements.
