Ryder Cup Brings Opportunity To Farmingdale Residents

When the announcement was made that New York would be hosting three majors, the governor was speculating on the economic impact it would have on the state.  She was very optimistic about the future between the PGA and the state.  Now with the Ryder Cup in full swing, it looks like the locals are already taking advantage of one big golf tournament.

Farmingdale And The Ryder Cup

For 2025, Bethpage Black was the course of choice for the Ryder Cup.  As a result, both Long Island and Manhattan were preparing for the crowds.  For the locals, they saw an opportunity with the large crowds, and many became hosts for the weekend.  ABC 7, the local news station, reported on the uptick in rental ads.  A homeowner was interviewed who was renting out parking spots in his driveway.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal,” a Farmingdale resident told ABC 7.  “People come from all over the state, they love golf, all over different states, and they want to park.”

Farmingdale has seen such an uptick in traffic that the city had to close off whole areas of the town to anyone who wasn’t a resident.  Other residents started putting up rooms to rent over the weekend.  Alternatively, some even put up whole homes for a massive markup.  Some residents are reporting that homes are being rented out for $25K.  Others are reporting prices as high as $50K, as to whether or not those deals went through is another story.  All to make some money off the Ryder Cup crowds.

Resident Response

The residents of Farmingdale are, of course, the ones making a quick buck off the fans.  Anyone in a college town around spring graduation knows how hard it is to get a hotel room.  Some residents are rather annoyed at the Ryder Cup crowds.  Again, whole portions of town are cut off to them, but there is still an opportunity to be had with the crowds.  These crowds are willing to pay top dollar to see their favorite golfers.  Consequently, residents are willing to take a buck or two in exchange for accommodations.

Some deals don’t work out for the residents.  The one who rented out his driveway had to turn away a deal when a fan driving a camper wanted to park over the weekend.  The ones who made some money are already making plans for it.  Most are putting it into savings, while others are getting some much-needed housework done, and one mother is taking her son to Legoland.

Ryder Cup Day 1

At the time of writing, the first round of the  Ryder Cup is underway.  The most anticipated golf event of the year has begun, and now the best of the best are going at each other, either against or with each other.  A lot of preparation went into the cup.  Now it’s time to see if it will pay off and how it will conclude.  There has already been one controversy over a ball dispute, and given how big the event is, there is much more to come.
