Team USA finds itself in catchup mode after Day 1 of the 2025 Ryder Cup. The Europeans won the morning foursomes session, 3-1, and the afternoon fourball session, 2.5-1.5, to take a 5.5-2.5 lead into Day 2 and get their title defense off to a strong start.
Here are our biggest takeaways from Friday's disappointing start to the Ryder Cup.
For as dominant as Scheffler has been this year, he was the exact opposite on Friday at Bethpage Black. The world No. 1 lost both of his matches on Day 1 and didn't even reach the 17th hole in either. Surprisingly, this is nothing new for Scheffler. In nine career Ryder Cup matches, the four-time major champion is 2-4-3 and hasn't won a match since 2021.
For those who wanted to pin it all on Henley: Scheffler ranked 13th of 16 players in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green in foursomes today.

You’re the best player in the world.

The performance was especially disappointing because Europe's stars showed up in a big way. Jon Rahm went 2-0 and outclassed Scheffler in fourball, Tommy Fleetwood went 2-0 and ranked second in the field in strokes gained from tee to green, and Rory McIlroy made clutch putt after clutch putt to go 2-0. Scheffler is the best player in the world, and he needs to play like it on Saturday if the Americans stand any chance.
DeChambeau is likely catching some heat from fans about his 0-2 mark on Friday, but he was one of the best Americans on the course. The LIV Golf star led Team USA in strokes gained from tee to green in the foursomes session but lost because his partner, Justin Thomas, struggled mightily. A similar story played out in fourball, where DeChambeau ranked fourth among the 16 players in total strokes gained, but Ben Griffin ranked last.
Don't hold DeChambeau's 0-2 mark against him. He needs to be in the lineup for both sessions on Saturday.
What a performance from Young in the afternoon fourball session. After being benched in the morning, Young came out hot and made five birdies to propel him and Thomas to a 6&5 victory against Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard. He led the session in total strokes gained and ranked third in strokes gained from putting.
With Collin Morikawa, Harris English, Russell Henley and Ben Griffin struggling on Day 1, Young shouldn't see the bench for the rest of the tournament.
One of the storylines heading into this week was the idea that this raucous New York crowd would be the most hostile in Ryder Cup history. The Long Island faithful came out firing with a bellowing roar after DeChambeau smashed his opening tee shot near the green, but that turned out to be the highlight of the day from the crowd.

When the U.S. hit solid approach shots, it sounded like a calm afternoon at the Honda Classic. When Europe did the same, the crowd pop was just as loud. Choirs of European chants rang through the television broadcast all day with no counter from the supposedly brutish New Yorkers. The team needs you, folks. Bring the heat on Saturday.
