The third round concluded of the Travelers Championship, a tournament looking to treat those in competition better than the U.S. Open. The No. 1 ranked golfer in the Tour, Scottie Scheffler was also looking for good energy being it was his 29th birthday. With a boatload of achievements thus far in his early career, Scheffler had a birthday performance unrecognizable to many in the sport. Getting off to his worst start of any round in his career, Scheffler ultimately lost his first place standing, now dropping to a six place tie for the eighth standing. With the fourth and final round to take place Sunday, all eyes will be on the hopeful comeback performance from Scheffler and company.

Can Scheffler Work His Magic?

Coming into this tournament with 13 tour events played this far, Scheffler has made every cut with three of those resulting in victory. Now, he’s in uncertain territory and needing a big final round to make a run if so. With many in attendance crowding his first tee shot, Scheffler delivered with a triple bogey. That first mistake seemed to result in a snowball effect, leading to a posting of 72 and the fifth time in 55 rounds he’s been over par. In talking to the media, the top ranked Scheffler made it clear on his thoughts of this being labeled an easy course.

“Sometimes, especially in this day and age, people get way too caught up in the winning score being what is a proper test. I think a proper test is good shots being rewarded and bad shots being punished. I think this is one of the best golf courses for that,” Scheffler said. “There’s opportunity out there, and there’s also punishment. You look at the closing stretch; 15, if you hit a good shot, you’ve got a birdie opportunity. If you try to bail out right, you’re going to be in a bunker short right of the green and have a 40-yard bunker shot, a hard shot.

Golden Opportunity

Scheffler has a possible chance to remind everyone once again, why he’s the No. 1 ranked golfer in the sport. It will be an uphill battle by all means in his quest for a fourth win in this Tour season. Not only will Scheffler need to execute on the fairways and green, but have those result in birdies or better. In round three of play, he has two birdies in the first nine holes and three to end his day. Although, the hurt came in two double bogeys or more and two bogeys as well. With the unfortunate mishaps to drop Scheffler down seven spots, the sole beneficiary is seen in Tommy Fleetwood. Fleetwood was able to take advantage and now is looking to take home the Travelers Championship. All eyes will be on this final round and the capabilities of those at play.
