Scottie Scheffler’s usual Masters preparation took a backseat this year. The two-time champion withdrew from a key tournament on March 24, choosing to prioritize his family.
Scheffler stepped away from the Texas Children’s Houston Open just two days before the start. The PGA Tour revealed it was for “family reasons.” Reports later claimed it was because he was expecting his second child.
“Typically, I play Houston before I play this tournament [The Masters], so it was a little bit of a different prep than I’m used to,” said the 20-time PGA Tour winner during the Masters Tournament press conference.
Scottie Scheffler and Meredith Scheffler welcomed their second child, a son named Remy, on March 27, with the update confirmed by Doug Ferguson.
“Actually, I committed thinking the baby might come a little bit early, but I was glad I stayed home because I think he came that Friday, so I was definitely glad that I wasn’t out of town and I was able to be home for that,” said the 29-year-old.
The family, including newborn Remy, then traveled to Augusta National Golf Club for the Masters Tournament.
During practice rounds, Meredith was seen with the newborn in a stroller while Bennett stayed close to watch. A few days later, at the Par 3 Contest, the family walked the course together, with Meredith carrying Remy and Bennett joining in alongside his father.
After stepping back into play at the Masters Tournament, Scheffler completed his opening round at 2-under-par 70 and sits within reach of the lead, trailing Sam Burns and Rory McIlroy.
His round began with an eagle on the par-5 second, followed by a birdie on the third, setting the tone early in the day. Scottie Scheffler is scheduled to tee off in the next round on Friday at 14:19 (EDT).
The course is one he has consistently navigated over the years, with wins in 2022 and 2024, and multiple finishes within the top range, keeping him in the mix each time he returns.
If Scottie Scheffler wins in 2026, he would become the ninth player to secure at least three titles at the Masters Tournament.
