Scottie Scheffler’s Honest Response to Grand Slam Question: 'Never Stood There…'

He grew up at Royal Oaks, watching professional golfers practice. He even wore pants to practices and junior golf events because he wanted to look more like a pro. Over time, he quietly worked hard and became the best golfer in the world.

Scheffler’s tone shifted when asked what a U.S. Open title would mean to him. “I love my country,” he said. “I would love to be able to win my national open.”

He said that Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, this year’s course, suits the way he plays. Scheffler has done well at the U.S. Open before, and now he is going there with one main goal: to win it.

Scheffler has work to do at Doral this week, and he comes in after finishing second in two straight events. Close, but not enough.

At the podium on Wednesday, he didn’t make any excuses. He spoke clearly about luck, momentum, and how small differences decide results over 72 holes.

“Sometimes you hit a good shot and get a bad break,” he said. “Instead of birdieing that hole, I make bogey, and all of a sudden, that’s two shots.”

Two shots can make all the difference at the end of a week. He knows what a great run looks like. Last year, from the Nelson to the Memorial, he won three times in four events. That is his standard, and that is what he is trying to reach again.

Doral is the first step, Shinnecock is next, and somewhere at the end of that road sits a U.S. Open title and a completed Grand Slam.
