Senior PGA Championship More Watchable Than Colonial

It was an odd weekend, with the world’s top player at Colonial Country Club a week after winning his third major in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

However, Scottie Scheffler was outside the leaderboard, and instead the leaders were Ben Griffin and Matti Schmid.

Except for Rickie Fowler, who was just behind the leaders and with a chance to win, the PGA Tour leaderboard was full of unknowns.

Up north, just outside the nation’s capital, the oldest senior major was taking place at a recently redone Congressional Country Club.

Off River Road in Bethesda, Maryland, the course that will host a PGA Championship and Ryder Cup in the future was part of the story, but the final-round leaderboard looked like a who’s who of professional golf.

Angel Cabrera, Retief Goosen, Stewart Cink, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington, Thomas Bjorn, Vijay Singh and Justin Leonard were among the players who had a chance on Sunday.

With over 12 major titles in the field, and 11 players within the four co-leaders at 5-under, the senior event was worth watching.

Next year, this event will be moving out of its May Memorial Day slot to April, the week after the Masters.

From 1990 to 2000, the Senior PGA Championship was positioned on the schedule for the week after the Masters, all played at PGA National in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Next year could see a fresh addition if Tiger Woods, with his 15 majors, is added to the roster.

Adding the GOAT, who will turn 50 in December, would be more than just a boost to the senior circuit.

If Woods is competitive, it could redefine the Champions Tour, even if he plays a limited schedule.

Adding Woods to this week’s leaderboard at Congressional would have guaranteed a better viewing product than that at Colonial.

Even without Woods, the 85th Senior PGA Championship was a more compelling golf tournament than that in Fort Worth and could be a prelude to things to come.
