Was Sergio Garcia making a statement with his win in Hong Kong?
With a final round 63, the 45-year-old Spaniard won his second time on the LIV Golf Tour and did it in style with eleven birdies and one eagle over the final 36 holes.
And just importantly, sent a message to the European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald.
“I think he's watching,” Garcia said of Donald. “We've been in touch, so I know that he's keeping an eye. The only thing I can do is keep playing good golf, and I just want to help the European team like I've tried to do every single time I've been a member of that team, and hopefully he will think I'm good enough for it.”
Donald, at the October year-out event at Bethpage, Donald confirmed that he had some chats with Garcia and that rejoining the DP World Tour is necessary.
“He'd have to follow all the rules and regulations like everyone else, and if he does that, again, he will be eligible to partake in the Ryder Cup.,” Donald said.
Tied with Peter Uihlein and England’s Paul Casey at the beginning of the third round, Garcia had a goal of shooting 5-under, instead he recorded a 7-under round bogey-free, winning by three shots over Dean Burmester.
“When I got to 5-under, then I had to make a new goal, and I was like, okay, let's try to make a couple more in the last eight holes because I got to 5 on 10,” Garcia said. “I played very well. I gave myself a lot of chances throughout the whole day. I only made a couple bad swings, but I got away with them and recovered nicely.”
By winning, Garcia also put his Fireballs GC team in an excellent position, winning by a shot over Stinger GC.
“It was nice to see not only that I was doing well and leading the tournament, but my teammates were playing great,” Garcia said of his teammates Abraham Ancer, David Puig and Luis Masaveu. “They were keeping us there with a chance to win. Obviously when you can pull the double, it's a lot sweeter than if it's just one of them. Very proud of them.”
Garcia’s win supports his efforts to enter the Masters, the 100th major of his career.
“Super excited about it,” Garcia said of playing Augusta for the 26th time. “It's a milestone that not a lot of people get to achieve, so I'm super proud, super happy, and I can't wait to go there and just enjoy it. Whatever happens, but I'm just going to try to enjoy the week as much as possible, and then hopefully my game will show up.”
