The Cameron Young stat that should terrify the rest of the PGA Tour

Cameron Young is on the very short list of the best golfers on the planet in 2026.

It’s been a breakout season for the 28-year-old American, who has won The Players and The Cadillac Championship, as he was in the final pairing with Rory McIlroy on Sunday at The Masters.

After winning his first PGA Tour event last season, the floodgates opened for Young. He was one of Team USA’s brightest stars at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black and has risen to number three in the Official World Golf Rankings.

But the stats show that Young has another level to get to, and that should terrify the rest of the PGA Tour.

Cameron Young is not putting as well as last season

The big question on Young was never his ball striking, which has always leaped off the golf course. Young has always been one of the purest hitters on tour, but his play on the greens held him back.

Whether Young could break out and perform at this level always came down to if he could be a good enough putter. He lost strokes on the green in 2023 and 2024, and it was a glaring weakness in his game.

Year Cameron Young Strokes Gained: Putting
2023 -0.11
2024 -0.17
2025 +0.63
2026 +0.48

But what’s shocking about Young’s results this year is that he actually rolled the ball better in 2025 than he has this year. He gained 0.63 strokes putting last year, and only 0.48 so far this season.

His wins at The Players and the Cadillac Championship were his two best putting performances all year by a large margin. In fact, they are the only two times he has gained over a stroke on the greens this season.

When he putts well, Young wins, and that’s a scary thought for the rest of the tour as they look to hang on to his coattails.

Where Cam Young has improved dramatically this season

What held Young back for the first time last season wasn’t his putting. He actually had the best putting year of his life in 2025. But as his short game improved, Young’s ball striking fell off a cliff.

Shockingly, Young lost strokes to the field on approach for the first time in his PGA Tour career in 2025. He had a horrendous ball-striking start to the season, which led to six missed cuts, but he corrected this after changing golf balls on the back end of the year.

Year Cameron Young Strokes Gained: Approach
2023 +0.5
2024 +0.38
2025 -0.02
2026 +0.78

In August, a couple of days before his first PGA Tour win at the Wyndham Championship, Young switched to a Titleist Pro V1X prototype golf ball, which was designed to handle his spin, and it’s been liftoff from there.

Young won the Wyndham running away, and is having the best season of his career on approach. With this combination of putting and ball striking, Young is now the man to beat heading into the PGA Championship.
