Round 2 of the Memorial Tournament went pretty darn well for us, as we went 2-0 in our matchup props to sweep the day. Let's run it back with two more matchup bets for Round 3 from Muirfield Village Golf Club.
If you've followed our round matchup props at all this year, you know this is the exact setup we look for in a bet. Sahith Theegala and Russell Henley both enter the weekend at even par, but they made it there in much different ways.
Theegala has been striping the ball at Muirfield Village, as he ranks third in the field behind only Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland in strokes gained from tee to green for the week. He led the field in Round 2 by gaining a whopping 5.04 strokes on approach, but he shot just 71 because he lost 3.13 strokes on the greens, the third-worst mark of any player on Friday. Theegala is one of the best putters on the PGA Tour, so we expect a bounce-back performance with the flatstick on Saturday.
Henley also shot a 71 in the second round, but he only did so because a hot putter saved him during a poor driving round. The American lost strokes from off the tee in each of the first two rounds, so his scoring isn't sustainable at a difficult ball-striking test like Muirfield.
Jackson Koivun is getting a ton of respect with this price, and we're not really sure why. This is a 19-year-old kid playing in his first-ever PGA Tour event, and he's favored to beat a veteran with two wins on his Tour resume? Yeah, we'll gladly play against that.
We're not saying Koivun isn't talented. He's got some serious game. The Auburn freshman won the Jack Nicklaus Award, the Phil Mickelson Award, the Ben Hogan Award and led the Tigers to a national championship in his first year as a collegiate golfer. If you don't know his name yet, you will soon.
This is a bet on the price, and Koivun was a bit lucky to make the cut considering he ranks 65th out of 73 players this week in strokes gained on approach. He found some magic beans to rank fifth in the field in strokes gained from around the green through two rounds, but his poor ball striking is going to catch up to him.
