Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley had a rough ride at last week’s Ryder Cup.
Scheffler did manage to take down Rory McIlroy in the singles, but overall, it was a tournament he would probably like to forget.
He teamed up with Henley for both foursomes sessions, and they came up short twice.
Throughout the week at Bethpage Black, the pair never really found their rhythm together as a team.
The call to have Henley hit tee shots on the odd holes on day one instead of Scheffler raised more than a few eyebrows.
According to reports, Europe’s data team felt confident they would pick up a point after seeing that pairing decision early on.
But away from the course, what role did Scheffler play behind closed doors?
One of Bradley’s vice-captains, Webb Simpson, spoke about Scheffler’s influence in the US team room during an appearance on the Bible Caddie Podcast.
Simpson highlighted how much of a presence the world number one had off the course, even with his struggles during play.
“There were multiple moments where I thought, beyond the competition, that you cannot muster up and synthetically create these type of moments,” he began by saying.
“The way the team lifted up the world number one Scottie Scheffler on Saturday night. Scottie, in the press conference, he said it. He said last night was one of the lowest moments of my career but it turned into one of the most special moments of my career.
“It is what Keegan said to him in front of the entire team and wives.
“It’s the way Russell Henley was so encouraged by Scottie Scheffler, because Scottie asked Russell how he was doing late in the day and Russell Henley was so affected that Scottie Scheffler, the world number one with the weight of the golfing world on his shoulders, is actually concerned about how Russell Henley is doing.
“Russell was affected by that. And then Keegan got to encourage the team and Scottie.
“This week was more than any purse, anybody’s record, even the Ryder Cup score. It was about these moments that we will never forget.
“I went up to Scottie and I could barely talk and I finally got out that as much as I admire his golf, I admire the man he is, the way he loves the Lord, his wife and family, that means way more to me than 19 wins and all the majors.
“When you are able to be in a moment, you rise above the current and can see there is a lot of good things that are happening here in the midst of a struggle. It’s just so special.”
Scheffler’s track record at the Ryder Cup does not exactly jump off the page.
He will need to turn things around if he wants to make a bigger impact in future editions.
Results | Scheffler’s totals |
Matches played | 12 |
Wins | 3 |
Losses | 6 |
Halves | 3 |
Total points | 4.5 |
For the US to find some consistency, Scheffler will need to figure out how to hit top form when it matters most in this competition.
The US need Scheffler to step up and be their anchor. But over the last two events, he has not quite been that.
