Fred Couples has a career that is a true testament to longevity, standing out as one of the most impressive in golf history.

He claimed the Masters title back in 1992 and returned three decades later to become the oldest player ever to make the cut at Augusta, shooting one over par after two rounds at the age of 63.

In 2012, Couples led the Masters after two days while trying to become the oldest major champion. He’s still playing Augusta National today, opening with a one-under round in 2025.

Couples has a Green Jacket and 15 PGA Tour wins under his belt, but he believes his best round came at age 63 during the SAS Championship. As he put it:

Fred Couples shoots his age in SAS Championship final round

At 63, Fred Couples posted a bogey-free 12-under-par final round at the 2022 SAS Championship. The score of 60 not only secured him a six-stroke victory but also set a record for the lowest closing round in PGA Tour Champions history.

He went on a tear, making five straight birdies to close out the front nine before finishing with seven consecutive birdies to cap off an incredible stretch of play.

The round was so impressive that even Tiger Woods took notice, calling Justin Thomas while Couples was still playing.

Thomas recalled: “I think he was on 17 or 18. Tiger called me, and he’s like, ‘Are you watching this?’ I turned it on and watched him stripe it off 18 tee, stiff the iron shot, and make the putt.”

Reflecting on his performance afterwards, Couples said: “It’s easy to say because we’re standing here, but I think it’s the best round I’ve ever played. I hit a few loose shots and got away from them, but I made so many putts.”

“I don’t know what other rounds I’ve ever shot on the Champions Tour that are close to 60,” he added. “So this would probably be my best round and lowest score by far.”

No matter how you look at it, shooting your career-low score at age 63 is something very few players will ever experience.
