Tiger Woods has earned a lot of respect and influence in the PGA and golf in general. He has a legacy unmatched by anyone, is getting challenges from the Champions Tour, and was the face of the PGA. With that comes a lot of recognition. The question then becomes, what is one to do with all this? For Tiger Woods he started doing some charitable work. All the way back in 2006, he opened a nonprofit in Anaheim, California, called the TGR Learning Lab. Now, with the help of the TGR Foundation and the Cobbs Creek Foundation, a new Learning Lab has opened in Philadelphia.
The TGR Foundation is a nonprofit founded by Tiger Woods meant to give back to the community, primarily through educational programs. The idea being that a little bit of learning can go a long way for students. The programs include college prep, career prep, courses for STEM fields, as well as a scholarship program. All in a safe space where students can learn to their heart’s content.
Tiger Woods is, of course, not the only golfer looking to use his influence to better the world. Paul Azinger has the Compassion Center in Florida, meant to help those in need. Tiger Woods is going down a different charitable path. Woods has always been a believer in the power of education. He believes it to be a powerful tool in uplifting communities and individuals. By giving these students the keys to learning, they can have the tools to do the rest. On Monday, September 8th, Tiger Woods attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Smilow Woodland TGR Learning Lab. Right next to him were two students, Mayor Cherelle Parker and Chairman Christopher Magruire of the Cobbs Creek Foundation. During the ceremony, Tiger Woods was excited to be there to see more children being given the chance to further their education. All while thanking his team and the CC Foundation for their contributions.
“It’s an honor to be here to celebrate this moment with my Foundation and the kids we’re serving in West Philadelphia,” said Woods. “I’m proud of my team and grateful to Cobbs Creek Foundation and everyone who has worked with us to make an impact in this community.”
Although the ribbon-cutting happened just today, the Learning Lab had a soft opening earlier this year. Mostly as a way to make sure it gets a stronger foothold in the community and to prepare the teachers for when the lab actually opens for the fall semester. Courses are free, a student needs only to sign up and attend.
This is only the first step for the Cobbs Creek campus. The CC Foundation has plans for expansion to better serve the city of Philadelphia. Although the Learning Lab alone has a lot to offer, from science and engineering to math and the arts. The lab has a lot of work to do, especially with an expected attendance of over four thousand. Tiger Woods wouldn’t have it any less. He wants to see the plans through, all for the purpose of serving the communities that need it the most.
