In August 1996, just before his first PGA tour as a professional, Tiger Woods held his first official press conference at Brown Deer Park Golf Course in northern Milwaukee County.

He opened it with a simple but iconic line, “Hello, world.”

The world anticipated that Woods would create history and he did.

But let’s know his side of the story regarding his opening words, “That week was a blur because I just came off winning the amateur,” he said. “A press conference I could barely remember. It was just a whirlwind.”

Woods had become the first player ever to win 3 consecutive U.S. Amateur titles in 1994, 1995, 1996. He also had represented the U.S. in the Walker Cup.

Nike and Titleist were already after Woods, who was named NCAA Player of the Year (1996). Reportedly, they had placed a $40 million contract before him.

“I just wanted to hit the golf ball. Yeah. Just get all the stuff that I, as you know, you’re unfamiliar with and do something that I know I can do. Just get on a golf course,” Woods said.

Feeling the pressure of the media and conferences, Woods entered into his first event on the PGA tour two days later at the Greater Milwaukee Open. Although he finished T60, he hit a hole-in-one for the 14th hole which the crowd enjoyed.

Now, completing about 30 years in the professional scene, Woods still goes on.

What does he have to say about retirement?

Woods isn’t near the finish line, or is he?

“As a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not… I get to still make that decision [to retire], where he doesn’t,” he said.

Woods had hit back at former Scottish golfer, Colin Montgomerie who suggested that he should retire.

His last appearance was at the 2024 The Open Championship where he missed the cut.

“Sometimes I have good days, sometimes I have bad days. Disc replacement is not a lot of fun. … So as I said, I’ve had a lot of procedures prior to that, so the body doesn’t quite heal like it was when I was 24.”

Woods was plagued with injuries to his back and Achilles in 2025. With the Masters round the corner, it still remains unsure whether Woods will be a part of the Major.
