Tommy Fleetwood finally got his first PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship last week, finishing ahead of Scottie Scheffler in the process.
He ended a long wait for a PGA Tour win with a three-shot victory over Russell Henley and Patrick Cantlay at East Lake, while Scheffler finished four shots behind.
You could tell from the reaction around East Lake that Fleetwood has grown into one of the most popular players on the tour.
The fact that he had most of the crowd pulling for him, even against so many American players, said it all.
Gary Player was just one of several big names who congratulated Fleetwood after he picked up his first PGA Tour win in Atlanta.
Now comes the harder part – turning one win into more and trying to close the gap to world number one Scheffler.
Over the past three months, the world number one has been in remarkable form.
Even with a slow start to the 2025 season, he still picked up five wins and 16 top-10 finishes from 19 starts. He also finished inside the top 25 in every event he played.
Fleetwood aims to learn from Scheffler’s recent performances to consistently compete better next season.
During an appearance on the Pardon My Take Podcast, the Englishman discussed his recent victory at East Lake and addressed whether he was aware of the world number one’s position on the leaderboard during the Tour Championship’s final round.
He said: “A little bit but not loads because I was kind of locked in on what I was doing. I vaguely had a score in my mind that I felt if I got to, especially after Patrick’s start, because a lot depended on how he was doing, I was playing with him and we were on the same score at the start of the day.”
“He had a bit of a rough start, so he was always playing catch up but you do see it. As much as you try not to, they are around and you do see them.
“But I was focusing on my thing and I started to play well on the back nine, so I didn’t pay that much attention.”
Fleetwood had a solid year on the PGA Tour, finishing second in total strokes gained, just behind Scheffler.
But how did he fare against the world number one across other key areas?
Stats | Fleetwood’s rank | Scheffler’s rank |
Strokes gained off the tee | 47th | 1st |
Strokes gained approach | 5th | 1st |
Strokes gained around the green | 20th | 15th |
Strokes gained scrambling | 19th | 1st |
Strokes gained putting | 15th | 20th |
Strokes gained total | 2nd | 1st |
The numbers highlight the gap Fleetwood still needs to close if he wants to regularly compete with Scheffler.
But his win at East Lake proved he’s capable of taking down the best on the biggest stage. That kind of belief can go a long way.
