Two surprising popular picks emerging to win Players Championship

You don't have to go to a betting page to know who has the best odds right now to win the Players Championship this weekend. The field for every PGA Tour event this season has had some mix of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler somewhere at the top.

What about one of the guys with longer odds? Is there a player further down the list who could provide a big payday?

There are actually two such players multiple experts think have a better chance of winning than their odds show, and they just so happen to be starting in a group together: six-time PGA Tour winner Max Homa and 2021 Players Championship winner Justin Thomas.

Thomas and Homa don't necessarily have the longest odds to win the event, currently listed at 18-1 and 20-1 at DraftKings, but there are still arguments for both to perform better at TPC Sawgrass than their odds imply. Thomas, for one, hasn't missed a cut there in seven tries, including in 2021 when he won the event. While he finished his last two starts T-20 and T-21, the Players Championship is a spot where Thomas can rebound and finish atop the leaderboard.

Homa, who finished first at the Farmers Insurance Open and placed second at the Genesis Invitational, is already a popular bet ahead of the Players Championship, according to Twitter betting hub GolfBet. As Rotowire's Len Hochberg told Sports Illustrated, the host course is well-suited to the California native's game.

"Talked earlier about Sawgrass requiring every club in the bag. That sounds like a Max Homa golf course," Hochberg said.

The Players Championship tees off at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday. Tee times have not yet been announced.
