Jon Rahm’s Ryder Cup future is under serious threat as his dispute with the DP World Tour continues to rumble on.
The Spaniard confirmed last month that he has withdrawn his appeal over the fines handed to him since joining LIV Golf.
However, Rahm still does not intend to pay those fines, leaving major doubt over whether he will be eligible for the European team at Adare Manor in 2027.
Now, legendary coach Butch Harmon has delivered a blunt message on the situation.
Rahm is one of the biggest names in world golf, but his stance has put him at odds with the DP World Tour.
Unlike several other LIV players, he has not agreed to a compromise that would see fines waived in exchange for playing several events on the European circuit.
That decision has not gone down well with Harmon.
“If Jon is not there, I think it will be self-inflicted,” he told The Telegraph. “I don’t see where he has been coming from on his little rant.”
Harmon made it clear that Rahm’s absence from the Ryder Cup would ultimately be his own doing if the situation is not resolved.
“But the stuff of the DP World Tour, I feel, was uncalled for,” he continued. “If you want to play there, these are the rules.
“If you don’t want to play there, don’t play there and accept the consequences. It’s his choice.”
Despite the criticism, Harmon also acknowledged Rahm’s quality, insisting he remains one of the best players in the world when focused.
Justin Rose has also weighed in on Rahm’s situation, offering a more measured perspective but still highlighting the risk.
“I think it is absolutely feasible, yeah. I think the line in the sand has been drawn,” he previously explained.
Rose pointed out that several players have already aligned themselves with the DP World Tour’s approach.
“I think quite a few players have committed to the strategy that the DP World Tour has set forward in terms of paying the fines and/or playing some extra tournaments to help bolster the schedule.”
However, he suggested there is still a path forward if Rahm is willing to compromise.
“I think the DP World Tour is willing to work with Jon, so it’s going to take a bit of compromise. I hope we can find that common ground now.”
With the Ryder Cup still some time away, there remains an opportunity to resolve the situation. But as things stand, Rahm’s place on the European team is far from guaranteed.
