Unfortunate News Emerges on Jordan Spieth on Monday

Jordan Spieth’s run at the 2025 Open Championship didn’t quite go as planned. The 2017 Open champion struggled early at Royal Portrush, opening with a 73 on Thursday. He bounced back with a solid 69 on Friday to make the cut, followed by a 72 on Saturday and a closing 68. But it wasn’t enough. Spieth finished outside the top 30, a frustrating result at a major where he once held glory.

To add to his woes, the latest Ryder Cup standings delivered another blow. Spieth has dropped to 26th in the U.S. rankings, well outside the top six automatic qualifiers and even behind several hopefuls for captain’s picks.

The top names include Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau and Harris English. Meanwhile, other notable players ahead of Spieth are Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and U.S. captain Keegan Bradley.

Despite his tough week, Spieth still took a moment to appreciate greatness. When asked about Scottie Scheffler’s dominant win at the Open, Spieth didn’t hold back. He compared Scheffler’s humble excellence to that of three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. “Nikola Jokic is the only guy I can think of that’s a superstar that’s equally unassuming in any sport in the modern era,” Spieth said. “That’s what Scottie’s like.”

It’s clear Spieth remains a student and fan of the game, even as he battles to regain top form. With limited time left before Ryder Cup selections, the three-time major winner will need a strong finish to the season to have a shot at representing Team USA. For now, the road looks steep, and Monday’s update only adds to the urgency.
