News broke early Monday morning that Viktor Hovland and long-time coach Joe Mayo have parted ways again following the completion of the 2024 season. The pair cited "differences in how to move forward" as the reason for the split. This marks the second time the pair has agreed to part ways.

Hovland, 27, won the 2023 FedEx Cup championship with impeccable form and Mayo's help. As a surprise to many, the duo parted ways shortly after the conclusion of the 2023 season. At the time, Hovland has cited wanting to learn new approaches as a way to elevate his game.
The strategy did not work. Hovland was a complete shell of himself from the year prior. After being one of the most dominant players on the Tour in 2023, Hovland struggled weekly late into the spring, failing to find himself in contention. This led to him ultimately bringing Mayo back on staff just prior to the PGA Championship. Following the reunion, Hovland went on to finish solo 3rd in the second major of the season and give himself somewhat of a rebirth.
That said, the success was short lived. Hovland only managed to finish inside the top 20 four more times the rest of the season. The experiment ultimately seemed to run its course and led to today's announcement.
I am curious to see where Viktor Hovland goes from here. In addition, I have questions about what his approach for 2025 is going to be. He went from one of the most dominant performers weekly in 2023 to almost non-existent in 2024 after staff changes on his team.
We can only hope Hovland finds a way to regain his form in 2025. It would be a shame for him to have so much potential and success early on, only to become yet another flash in the pan on the PGA Tour. Golf is difficult, and nothing is given, making it easy for a successful career to disappear just as quickly as it arrived.
