Viktor Hovland Rediscovers Confidence With Travelers Championship Win

As Viktor Hovland entered the back nine Sunday at the Travelers Championship, his lead had vanished. With another bogey on the 10th hole, he trailed World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by two strokes.

Then Hovland received a break, with storms in the area forcing the suspension of play for nearly an hour and a half.

“It was nice to just get completely off the golf course and reset and I felt a lot better coming back,” Hovland said Sunday. “Sometimes that’s kind of all you need.”

Hovland came out firing after the delay, carding back-to-back birdies to match Scheffler at 21 under. The pair each had a putt to win the tournament on the 18th, with Hovland missing his by just inches on the low side.

With limited daylight remaining, the pair headed to a sudden-death playoff Monday morning.

Scheffler put his approach shot to two feet to apply the pressure on the first playoff hole, but Hovland remained steady, leaving himself with just over six feet for a birdie putt of his own.

Hovland converted on his attempt, with Scheffler needing to match to continue the playoff. Scheffler’s putt carried too much pace, catching the lip as Hovland secured the victory.

“It’s one of those putts that if I make mine, his gets significantly tougher, and if I miss, he probably will make his,” Hovland said. “It was definitely no gimmies there, so to put the pressure on him was awesome.”

The two were paired together in each of the last two rounds, with Hovland ultimately prevailing over the World No. 1.

“What he’s been doing the last few years is just super impressive, and I have so much respect for him and his game,” Hovland said. “To go up against him and have a chance to beat him, I think it’s just super exciting. That’s what you wake up every day to get better, that’s for those moments right there.”

The victory marked a significant turnaround for Hovland, who missed the cut last week at the U.S. Open. Injuries and swing changes have yielded inconsistent results recently, with his last win coming at the 2025 Valspar Championship.

Hovland said throughout the week that he was returning to a point where he could trust his game again, with the win now reinforcing that belief.

“I’ve had moments where, okay, I think I’m onto something, it feels good, and then that one big miss comes back again,” he said. “Even if you’re playing good golf it’s still kind of in the back of your mind a little bit.”

Down the stretch, Norwegian fans in town for the FIFA World Cup lined the fairways to will Hovland to victory. With Norway not scheduled to compete again until Tuesday in Dallas, many were able to make it to the course Monday for the playoff.

“I thought it was super exciting,” Hovland said. “The crowds were super respectful and it just really motivated me to play better. Obviously with some Norwegian jerseys out there it brought the vibes, and I think the American crowds thought it was cool as well. I thought it made the event a lot more enjoyable.”

As Hovland recreated the iconic “row” chant with his countrymen, one Norwegian fan’s presence made the event all the more meaningful for him, with his mother Galina able to witness his win in person.

“I won a few times now over the world, but never had my mom or dad watch me win one,” he said. “So that was really cool to have her here. We get to go home together to Norway later today, so, yeah, couldn’t be a better way to win a golf tournament and celebrate going home.”

Hovland now heads to Royal Birkdale ahead of the season’s final major with a newfound confidence in his swing.

“At the end of the day I just proved a lot to myself that I have got the game now and I really made some big strides in just the way I’ve driven it all week, that’s been kind of one of the weaknesses this year,” Hovland said. “This week I drove it amazing. I did a lot of good stuff the whole week. I just want to continue that trend.”

The biggest takeaway, he said, was renewed perspective.

“Whether I win or lose or whatever, I just want to play good golf and have fun out here again,” he said.
