Watch: Viktor Hovland practice round hole-in-one as foursome tee times announced

The United States hasn't  won a Ryder Cup on foreign soil since 1993.

If Norwegian Viktor Hovland's tee shot on the par-4 fifth hole at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club is any indication of how the tournament in Rome will go, the U.S. could be in trouble once again.

With Friday's first-round tee times announced, let's take a look at if the United States can take an early lead.

Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton v. Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns: 1:35am EST

The first matchup features two of the most prominent names on the PGA tour between World No. 1 Scheffler and No. 3 Rahm. Per Yardbarker's Jack Dougherty, they are two of the best on earth off the tee. Both U.S. captain Zach Johnson and Europe captain Luke Donald elected to pair their best drivers with strong putters with the event starting with foursomes.

With Rahm and Scheffler likely to cancel out the other's drive, this foursome will likely come down to the putting of Hatton and Ryder Cup Rookie Burns. If Hatton is able to keep a cool head, expect his experience to prevail and give this point to Europe.

Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg v. Max Homa and Brian Harman: 1:50am EST

Despite his practice round hole-in-one, Hovland is winless in his Ryder Cup career and paired with rookie Aberg. They take on two other rookies for the U.S. in Homa and Harman, neither of whom excel off the tee but are solid approaching and on the green.

Given the inexperience in this group, Homa and Harman's ability to finish holes from tough situations should secure the point in the foursome point here.

Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka v. Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa: 2:05am EST

This is the most likely matchup for the Americans to secure points.

Lowry and Straka both rank below Fowler and Morikawa in the world rankings. While Fowler's history at the Ryder Cup isn't pretty (3-7-5), Morikawa is 3-0-1 at the event in his career.

The combination of skill and experience on this stage should result in the Americans securing the point from this foursome.

Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood v. Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay: 2:20am EST

With Zach Johnson electing to sit both Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, Schauffele and Cantlay get the unfortunate draw of McIlroy and Fleetwood. The two are a combined 16-14-6, winning more rounds in the Ryder Cup than their opponents have played (eight for Schauffele and Cantlay).

Despite their opponent's pedigree, Cantaly and Schauffele have found success of their own, combining to win six of their eight Ryder Cup points. With another two strong ball-strikers (McIlroy and Cantaly) complimented by solid all-round golfers (Fleetwood and Cantlay), the advantage of experience and European home dominance will lead Donald's anchors to even the score 2-2.
