Most golf partnerships are based on game plans and performance. But the friendship between Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang began on a more personal level, and their fathers played a big part in bringing them together.

Thompson and Khang spoke together at a press conference on June 9 before the 2026 Dow Championship. The duo returns to Midland Country Club to compete in the LPGA Tour’s signature team event.

“Obviously our dads are a big part of our lives,” Khang said during the press conference. Thompson responded immediately. “We definitely bonded over that,” she said, laughing.

The two were asked what they had learned about each other through their partnership. Their fathers came up as a natural starting point, a shared connection that helped build a friendship carried into multiple events.

“We love you dad. Happy early Father’s Day,” Khang added.

The two have competed together at Solheim Cups and at last year’s Dow Championship. Thompson said the time they shared together has brought them closer.

“These events really bring us together and bring out the personalities, and definitely a bonding experience,” she added.

Khang pointed to humor as another thread running through the friendship. “I think our humor complements each other as well, so we got each other,” she said.

On the course, their games fit naturally. Khang said she has been hitting it into what she calls “Lexie range,” describing Thompson as No. 1 in fairways while she hits to 15-20 feet.

“Obviously alternate shot can be stressful, but when you have a partner like that, it’s a lot nicer,” Khang shared.

Their team walk-up song remains Biggie Smalls. Khang admitted she still has not settled on a song and opened the DMs for suggestions.

Thompson’s week at Midland comes with some relief, but also after one of the hardest moments of her recent career.

Lexi Thompson Returns at Dow Championship After Tough Few Weeks

The Dow Championship will be Thompson’s first tournament since she missed the 2026 U.S. Women’s Open.

By missing the tournament, Thompson ended a run of 19 consecutive appearances that started in 2007, when she played as a 12-year-old amateur.

Before the U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera Country Club, she spoke about the end of that streak in an Instagram post.

“For the first time since that week, I won’t be competing in the U.S. Women’s Open,” she wrote. “Definitely not a great feeling, I’d be lying if I said otherwise.”

She added, “But I have to remind myself that I’ve played in 19 in a row at the age of 30, and I’m very proud of that.”

Thompson has played four tournaments in 2026. Her best finish was a tie for 12th at the Chevron Championship. She has won 11 LPGA titles, with her last tour victory coming in 2019.

The Dow Championship gives her a different kind of week. “It’s definitely less pressure,” Thompson said. “But we’re still out here wanting to win and play our best golf.”
